Episode 11: Domo Arigato Mr Roboto

This week we are blessed with the visionary team of Paul Guinan and Anina Bennet to talk about what is best in life. ROBOTS! TECHNOLOGY! THE FUTURE.

It turns out if you put the five of us in a room you will get a tasting flight of sci fi novel synopsis, a discussion of tropes and where we think the future is headed.

Oh and by the way? The seeing with a tooth thing? Totes real.

Sorry that the comment comes so late, but I just wanted to say that I think one of the things the Mass Effect trilogy was trying to convey was the idea to question progress. Since forever, we’ve always been innovating and advancing our technology and always seeing it as forward progress. I believe it wasn’t really until we developed the atom bomb that we started to think that maybe all progress isn’t what we want. So, when we put AI’s in ships like in Mass Effect, and shit goes sour, I think that is welcoming our criticism of that idea that innovation is only ever good. So, why do they keep doing it? To make the philosophical point that we should probably question whether any one technological advancement is worth the risk it could pose if it went wrong. That’s my take anyway.
Also, I think it was Metroid Prime, the video game featuring Samus, that also had something like the detonation sequence that Ben was talking about: pulling something out, turning it, and pushing it in again with a satisfying shunk noise. You had the added benefit of have the wii remote, so you could do it yourself also, albeit without the force feedback.
